Cloud for a Polish company: four barriers to entry – and how we remove them

A typical situation: a company employs a few dozen people, the servers bought years ago are reaching retirement age, and virtualization licences grow more expensive year after year. The decision "we are moving to the cloud" is made quickly. And then the trouble starts: a global provider's price list denominated in a foreign currency, a cost calculator with dozens of line items, a console and technical support in English, and to the question "where will our data physically be?" – an answer that begins with "it depends".
None of these obstacles concerns the technology itself. They are barriers to entry – and it is on them, rather than on generalities about "supporting growth", that we built our offering. This article is for companies considering their first step into the cloud, or a move away from a provider where they feel anonymous.
Why can nobody predict a hyperscaler's cloud bill?
In the price lists of global clouds, the trap is often not the server rates but the additional line items – chief among them the charges for outbound data transfer (known as egress). Your invoice can depend on how much data your users have downloaded, and nobody knows that in advance.
Our rule is: you pay for what you actually use – compute resources (vCPU, RAM, disk space) are billed hourly, prepaid or postpaid with a monthly invoice, with no surprise line items. Companies that prefer a fixed budget can instead settle on a single predictable amount for reserved resources. What to do when "we don't have anyone for the cloud"?
Hyperscalers – the largest global providers of public cloud – assume you have a team that will read the documentation and put the architecture together on its own. In Polish SMEs the opposite is more common: IT means one or two people, or an external service company.

Can cloud support and contracts be in Polish?
The language barrier in IT tends to be underestimated – until the moment when an outage of a production system has to be discussed in English with a consultant on another continent. With us, technical support works in Polish: you describe the problem in your own words, without first translating it into jargon, and on the other side there is an engineer working on the same platform.
The same applies to the formalities. The data processing agreement (DPA – the document required by GDPR when a provider processes data on your behalf) and the SLA – service level guarantees – are publicly available, and you discuss their content in Polish, with a Polish provider – not with a foreign head office through a web form.
Where is my data physically located in the cloud?
With a global provider, answering that question requires reading up on regions, zones and subprocessors. With us the answer is short: your data does not land on servers on the other side of the world – it stays in Poland, in infrastructure covered by GDPR, with a provider that is a Polish company, with whom you sign the contract directly rather than through a network of resellers. Proximity also has a purely physical dimension: the shorter the path the packets travel, the lower the latency in everyday work. When will a hyperscaler be a better choice than a local cloud?
We do not compete with hyperscalers on the breadth of the catalogue and there is no point in pretending otherwise. You will not find hundreds of managed PaaS services here, nor regions on six continents, nor a global partner network. If you are building a product that has to run in many regions of the world from day one, or your architecture relies on specific services of one of the global providers – a hyperscaler will be the better choice, and we will tell you so directly.
Our strength lies elsewhere: solid IaaS and file services built on open technologies, a predictable invoice, documents in Polish, and contact with a human being who knows your environment. For most Polish SMEs this is exactly the part of the cloud they genuinely need.
